Frequently Asked Questions
What is sod?
Sod is any type of grass that is grown on a grass farm, which can be cut into rectangular strips and installed in yards and parks. Sod consists of grass and soil, so it can be laid directly on the ground*, making it an easy and effective way to create an instant lawn.
*While optional, it’s generally recommended that you lay sod on a ground that’s been tilled between 3 to 6 inches deep, with a nutrient-dense topsoil added to the soil prior to tilling. This can help promote deep rooting, quick establishment, and reduce water requirements, as well as ensure the grass remains healthy overall.
Is sod the same as turf?
Yes! As a matter of fact, the terms “sod,” “grass,” “turf,” and “turfgrass,” all refer to the same thing.
Why should I use sod instead of seed?
Grass seed, as opposed to sod, has to be planted during a specific time of year, is more vulnerable to weeds, and requires considerably more maintenance.
While sod costs more than seeds and is a little more labor intensive, the fact that it can be immediately installed regardless of the season more than makes up for its drawbacks.
You can read more about the pros and cons of sod and seed in our blog, Grass Seed vs Sod.
How much is a pallet of sod in Austin?
That will depend on the type of sod you order and how much you order. You can use our handy Grasstimator Tool (available on our homepage) to get a quick quote and determine how much sod you’ll need for your project.
How do I lay sod?
First, you’ll want to prepare your yard by removing any weeds, rocks, and debris from your lawn. Next, prepare your soil by making sure it’s not compacted by adding a lawn topsoil blend and by tilling, ensuring the ground is level when you’re done. Once you have laid the sod, you’ll need to water it thoroughly. From there, you’ll want to press the sod into the soil, ideally using a sod roller, to push out air pockets, ensure root-soil contact, and reduce lumps.
How often should you water new sod?
You should water your newly laid sod immediately after installation and again every day for the first few weeks.
When should I fertilize my sod?
It is best to test your soil & make amendments based on your results before planting. Your new sod will come pre-fertilized, so there’s no need to fertilize right before or after planting. In fact, fertilizing newly planted sod immediately after installation can burn the roots and damage or kill your grass. However, applying organic slow-release fertilizer such as Microlife Brown Patch is safe and beneficial, as it will double as a preventative fungicide and soil conditioner.
The frequency, amount, and type of fertilizer you should use will vary based on the variety of grass you plant, weather, your soil type and condition, and other environmental factors. That’s why it’s essential to test your soil at least once a year and select your fertilizer based on the results. At a minimum, you should fertilize with a general 15-5-10 fertilizer in the spring and fall, and a winterizing fertilizer in the late fall.
After your order is processed, you will receive a variety-specific maintenance calendar via email to help guide you further.
How long does it take sod to root in Texas?
On average, it generally takes 3 to 4 weeks for sod to take root in Texas. However, the exact amount of time can vary depending on the variety of grass, your local weather conditions, and your soil quality. It often will root in as little as 2 weeks in the mid-spring through mid-summer, and take as long as 8 weeks in late fall through early spring.
How should I prepare my soil for sod?
You can prepare your soil for sod installation by first, tilling the soil to a depth of four to six inches to remove any debris or weeds, and then by leveling it using a rake or hoe. From there, you should fertilize the soil using a slow-release fertilizer and rake it to create a smooth surface for your sod, ensuring there is a gradual slope away from your property for proper drainage.

Can I only install sod in the spring and summer?
No! You can actually install sod at any time of the year, as long as the temperature is above freezing. In fact, there are many benefits of laying down sod after summer.
