What Is The Best Grass for San Antonio, Texas?

June 23, 2022 | Blog

Different areas of the country call for different types of grass. The same can be said for different areas within Texas; considering how large the state is, there are different climate types in different cities and counties. Here at The Grass Outlet, our primary service area is the Central Texas region, including San Antonio. With a subtropical climate, San Antonio is known for mild winters and hot, muggy summers. That means that the grass grown in the region must be able to succeed in these kinds of conditions.

With all that being said, it is just as important to consider the sunlight conditions, soil type, soil condition, and your maintenance & performance expectations. In this post from our blog, we’ll discuss the best grass for San Antonio, Texas. Be sure to review our Grass Care articles and variety pages for more info on assessing your install site and choosing the appropriate variety to thrive in your yard’s specific conditions.

Bermuda Grass

Across the southern United States, Bermudagrass is a popular choice for lawns and yards. Thanks to its drought-tolerant nature, it’s unlikely for bermudagrass to die in the rather dry climate of the San Antonio area. Bermudagrass is also popular due to its ability to withstand and recover from foot traffic of just about any level. But, if your lawn or yard has a lot of shade, bermudagrass will not be the best option, as it thrives best in full sunlight. Additionally, bermudagrass requires a fair amount of maintenance, requiring mowing up to two or three times a week during the summer growth period and when rainfall accumulations are high.

Zoysia Grass

Zoysia grass is another grass that is best fit for warm weather, and is widely regarded for its ability to withstand traffic, tolerate drought, and unlike bermudagrass, tolerate some amounts of shade. Thanks to the dense nature of Zoysia grass, it tends to crowd out most weeds before they get a chance to grow. Establishing Zoysia grass from seeds tends to be a very slow process, so it’s always recommended to choose sod for a Zoysia grass lawn instead. Zoysia grass tends to have moderate to high foot traffic tolerance but can take a while to fully recover from the stress of traffic.

St. Augustine Grass

St. Augustine grass has long been a popular option in the sub-tropical region of San Antonio because it adapts well to tropical climates moderated by oceanic climate changes, such as damaging cold temperatures. At The Grass Outlet, we grow three St. Augustine cultivars: Raleigh, Texas Native, and Palmetto. These St. Augustine varieties are great options for San Antonio because they thrive in a variety of soil types & conditions. These St. Augustine varieties are also popular options because they will outperform many other grass types in shadier conditions. While Raleigh has been a tried & true St. Augustine variety in San Antonio for decades, the other two types we grow can outperform in tougher growing conditions when compared to many different  St. Augustine varieties, including Raleigh. While Texas Native is coveted for its superb disease tolerance, Palmetto is loved for its unmatched shade & drought tolerance. What’s more, Palmetto & Texas Native St. Augustine varieties have exceptional color retention in colder weather & excellent early green-up in spring compared to Raleigh.
